New versions of the Onevinn Windows 10 Upgrade tools available – Beta

Posted on April 25, 2019April 3, 2021 by Jörgen Nilsson

Just in time for Windows 1903 the Onevinn Upgrade tools are getting some new features. Johan Schrewelius has been doing a great job once again.

“TSLaunch ConfigMgr extension 2.3.19109.1.msi”, is updated with improved datetime handling.

“UPGBackground 1.0.19111.1.msi”

  • It will show _SMSTSCurrentStepName all along the TS and an additional progressbar showing the actual upgrade progress during that step (setup.exe)
  • Improved self-destruct

And it looks beautiful!

They are available now in the Upgrade tools download here:
Onevinn – Featured (schrewelius.it)

Test it out, it is hard to test all scenarios and languages but we think it is ready 😀

The version found on technet, https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Windows-10-Upgrade-Tools-431094ca is from 2018-10-28 and the files with the versionnr you are refering to are in the beta folders of this release. I dont think technet is updated with the new files or are you saying we should use the beta ones?

      Hi Jörgen,
I’m trying to make it work in french. I have translated the txt file. It’s ok when UPGBackground is installed by TSLaunch but I want to install it by an application in task sequence and it’s always in English.
      Do you have any idea?

Normally when you find a solution to a problem, it’s good practice to share what your finding was.

Nice meeting you and Johan at MMS. Everything is working great, but we have about 15% of machines not finishing downloading the content, so always display “Failed” on the pre-flight checks with ContentAvaliable. Just sits there checking every 30 minutes. What logs should I check to see why it isn’t completing the pre-download?

I have the same issue with content not downloading.
What I then do is remove all those devices from the upgrade collection, wait 2 days, then add them again.
In most cases the download will succeed but it is really a big hassle.

Trying to use the beta version of UPGBackground but it doesn’t show the progress bar

Is it something that I have missed?

When I try and setup a deployment test using the documented Task Sequence and Package settings from the manual, I just keep getting the default SCCM Pop Up GUI letting me know there is a pending Task Sequence and do I want to run it now or snooze. I am not sure how to suppress it or if it should be necessary to do so? It’s not hard to duplicate the settings from the PDF, I am running SCCM 1902…

I am unable to get TSLaunch.exe to start, either in DEBUG mode or in a scheduled task that it creates. I have tested on several versions of Windows 10 with the same result, no popup to schedule the upgrade. I followed every step in the documentation, was there something required that I may have missed? I can run UPGBackground from an available task sequence and it works great!

Love the tool but some support would be nice. Can’t see any anwsers in the Comments and there are now anwsers from Johan at TechNet Gallery as well. It’s hard to inplement a tool i production and with no help if needed.

      Hello Jörgen,
I have (like Fred Dussault, May 2019) the problem with text output in a particular language.
With “TSLaunch” and translated txt file, should all text outputs be in English?
Unfortunately, only the first output box and the text from “UPGBackground.txt” is English, all other texts are Swedish.
      Do you have an idea?

      Hello Jörgen,
I used the tslaunch to upgrade Windows 10 some time ago, so thx for that great tool.
Now i try to upgrade again to 1909 but i ran into an issue.
The Upgrade itsself runs flawlessly, but after machine has been upgraded, the tslaunch is still in the scheduled tasks and starts over and over again, as it not detects a successful run.
I already checked the config, the build is correctly set.
      Is there anything i forgot?

Hi, have been using the tools to upgrade machines to 1809 ,and has been working really well. I am now looking at upgrading machines to 1909. In the current climate, being able to complete this task for remote users, working via a VPN connection would be great. However, I am running into a problem. The pre caching seems to be working ok, (all be, it can be slow depending on users broadband connection speeds). TSLaunch, installs and notifies the user that the upgrade is ready, user starts the upgrade successfully. The problem comes in the time it is taking. Over a VPN connection the time taken to complete is around at least double of the time taken to complete when in the office. Has anyone else experienced this, or have a solution ? Many Thanks.

      Hi
i discovered your tool a few weeks ago and it’s truly amazing . Thank you for that =)
however, i found some issues not very problematic but here they are:
-i saw that tslauch creates scheduled tasks and one of them is that it launches when a user logs in or at 10 AM each day. But when i reboot the PC and log in again, it doesn’t launch at all. same thing when it’s 10 AM. i have to launch the scheduled task manually for the tslaunch to start. the other scheduled task wich is the one i personalized when asking tslaunch to reschedule works fine. Is there something i missed here ?

-another thing is that, when i choose reschedule in tslaunch, there are 2 options: launch manually at a specified date and launch automatically at a specified date. When i choose launch manually, TSlaunch pops again at the time i decided so that’s good. but when i choose automatically, it does the same thing and doesn’t launch the Task Sequence on it’s own like it should (i suppose).

if you could help me with those two points it’ll be great .

      thank you

Hi Simon, I experience the same delay when running a task sequence remotely. In my situation I think it’s because the system reboots, drops off the VPN, and then attempts to reconnect to the MP after every TS step. I found a TS variable (SMSTSMPListRequestTimeoutEnabled) that might help with this. MS actually says to set it to “False” when deploying to internet computers to prevent the delay. I haven’t tested it yet but figured I’d share it if it helps.

Update: I was able to set up a Cloud Management Gateway in Azure. The VPN clients were able to find the CMG when rebooting on the Internet and progreesed through the TS smoothly. By pre-caching the content ahead of time, my test clients started completing the upgrade process in about the same time that it took on-premises.

      Hi Guys
Fantastic tool and have had plenty success with it
I see there is a new version “Current version: 2.4.21140.1, 2021-08-30 but do not seem to be download it anywhere (Tried: onevinn.schrewelius.it as well as Onevinn marketplace – which downloads the TSBackground), one feature that we would appreciate in a future release would be to be able to ignore Pending configmanager reboots (all others we can suppress except these)

      Hi Jörgen
Where do I find the BETA VersionUPGBackground for download.
I would appriciate, if you could please share the download link.

Question: I am facing issue with the old version, where I am not able to change the language, however the UPGBackground.txt has been copied and also working fine when I am running it locally.
